Image
Now a day teenagers and people in their early twenties hate their jobs, like for example me, I love the people I work with they are so sweet and it is a great environment to work in, but the actual work I do is the most dreadful thing ever. I absolutely hate going to work for that reason, but it pays well enough and I need money to pay for school, which is the exact mindset most teens and people in their early 20's have. You need to find a job that benefits you which is what I am currently trying to do, I want to be a marketer and I really need to find a job that deals with just that! For a job to benefit you, you must be passionate about it and enjoy going to work. You need a job that you can excel at and one that shows off your skills. If you are really good at what you do and you are passionate about it that is the perfect combination. I do very well at marketing and it is something I enjoy, I get to interact with people and it is super creative it is perfect for me. So, I enc...

Week 15 (MKTG 347) - Google is Your New Resume

Image
Back then when the Internet was barely used for anything employers would have to make an assumption as to what kind of person you were through your resume, a piece of paper that you wrote. Now, all an employer has to do to know more about you besides from your interview and resume is through Google. All they have to do is search your name and they can find things like your social media networks, your websites, and if you have been on someone else's Facebook page. They can see a lot of your personal life and it will help them determine if you are a good candidate for their business. There are a few things you can do to help the case of your Google resume, the first is to edit, which means you need to Google yourself look at anything that pops up and remove posts you do not want your employer to see on your social media or websites. After that if you are able to fill out a profile on your accounts specifically Twitter or LinkedIn, I recommended filling it out and making it look nic...

Week 14 (MKTG 347) - The World of Job-Hunting

Image
When you enter that job-hunting world it is a completely different place than the world of employment. Now I am going to go back to some of the basics of job-hunting to further help some of you. One thing you need to know about this new world is employers change, but job-hunters have not. Employers adapt to the time, they search one way during good times and another during bad times. Also, the average amount of time the job-hunt takes has increased by a lot, nearly 17 to 30 percent of the unemployed spend more than a year looking for a job. The average amount of time that a job lasts had decreased, which is not a good sign when the job-hunt is taking longer and the length of jobs are becoming shorter. Especially for those between the ages of 18 and 24, their jobs usually last a year or less. You need to know that now a day jobs are paying a lot less than they did in the early 2000's, there is a long list of jobs that do not pay that much. Most of the job-hunting process today tak...

There are somethings you should think about and do before diving deep into this idea. First, you should think about what kind of business you want to go into, write down a list of things that interest you and characteristics about yourself that will contribute to your decision. Image
Some people will choose a place of employment because they really need a job or because they want to work there. The first step is to find out what careers or work fit your skills and personality best. The second is try on some of the jobs before you pick one to pursue. Next comes finding out what kinds of organizations have the job that fits what you are looking for. Fourth, find names of particular places that interest you. The last step is to research the place you have chosen carefully, to see if it is a right fit for you. After this whole process is done remember to send thank you cards to all the employers who you have interviewed for. I know this seems like much, but it will make you look like a better candidate for the job. One last tip is to be more social, because the more social you are the more friends or people you know who may have a contact that could...

Week 9 (MKTG 347) - Self - Inventory Part II

Image
On to the second part of the self - inventory section I talked about in one of my previous posts. To start this section off, we will be discussing the seven parts to you or the seven ways of describing yourself. The first part of the seven is people, how do you describe yourself in terms of the people you would like to work with or help and describe those kinds of people. The second part is workplace, describe who you are in the workplace and what workplace environment suits you best. The third part is skills, find out what you can do and what your favorite skills are that you possess. The fourth part is your purpose in life, describe yourself when it comes to your goals or your purpose. To move further on the fifth part is the knowledge you already have, look at who you are based on the knowledge you already know and what interests you the most among all that knowledge. The sixth part is salary and responsibility, describe yourself when it comes to what suits you most whether it is ...

Week 8 (MKTG 347) - Self-Inventory Part I

Image
Once traditional job-hunting methods have failed and you are still in need of a job self-inventory is another good method to help you achieve your goal of finding the job for you. An inventory of who your are can help you in your job-hunting process because it is good to know who you are, what you like, and what you are good at. By evaluating yourself and all the aspects that make you who you are it can help narrow down jobs that are more in your favor. Some reasons why doing a self-inventory works is because by doing this you learn to describe yourself in many different, thus helping you approach different job-markets. Another reason this method helps is because you don't have to wait on companies to say they have a vacancy you can go out and find one that matches you and approach them yourself. One last reason this is helpful is because unemployment is frustrating and an interruption in people's lives, this interruption can help lead you to different opportunities, as well ...

Week 7 (MKTG 347) - What do you do when the job-hunt isn't working?

Image
I know the job-hunt can be difficult and it may not always be the way that you want it to be, but you know that's life. Here is some advice to you from job-hunters who struggled getting a job, but were successful in the end, and there one advice is to never give up! There are two different strategies to finding a job, the first one is the traditional approach, which is looking into the job-market and looking at ad posted online and off by employers. Then you find a few that you are interested in doing. Then you fix up your resume and send it to all the places you are interested in and if this doesn't work post your resume everywhere! If the traditional approach did not work for you there is another way that might, its the parachute approach. With this approach you do not start with the job-market, you start with yourself. You figure your skills and the things that you like in a job, you try to look for a job that satisfies what you like and know how to do best. Do not wait un...

Week 6 (MKTG 347) - Salary Negotiations

Image
Salary is one of the main things you need to discuss before you accept a job offer. Always be sure to ask before you accept, because if you don't you may receive a really low pay and you probably don't even know it. Do not start negotiating your salary until the interview is over and they have expressed interest in having you at their business. About the time they offer you the job, then you should ask about the salary. Sometimes employers will ask you in the beginning of the interview process, try responding by saying that you will happily answer that, but first you would like to know more about what the job involves. Now for the bidding of the amount of your salary. An employer may be willing to pay you $25 and hour, but want to try to get you for $16 an hour, you can basically ask for pay any where in between the range of $16 - $25. You can negotiate the highest pay, but the employer wants to save money so from there you can try to negotiate a salary that is not too low an...

Week 5 (MKTG 347) - Tips to Follow When Interviewing for a Job

Image
Now that you know about the millions of job vacancies that occur every month, it is time for you to apply to one and go through the interview process. Interviews can be very intimidating to some people, there are three kinds of interviews that many people do. The first one being interviews that are for fun or practice, where you are talking to people who are passionate about the same things as you. The second is interviews that are for information, where you talk with employees, experts, and information specialists about the industry you are interested in working in. Finally, the third is interviews for jobs, where you speak with employers or the specific person who might hire you. Now for a few tips that can help you in the interview process! The first tip I would suggest is to prepare for your interview before hand, like do research on the company because companies love when you know more about them and what they do. The next tip is to expect a lot of questions, be prepared to answ...

Week 4 (MKTG 347) - Millions of Jobs Available Each Month

Image
Job-hunting has changed dramatically since 2008, and it can be really hard for the unemployed to find a job. Although it is hard to find a job now a day, there are actually ten million vacancies a month. So, it is not the end of the world if you can't find a job right away, there are millions more you can look for and I am sure many will fit your skills and your preference. There are two aspects to job-hunting and they are the surface behavior or form, which is determined by current technology and new technology and these things alter the way job-hunting works. The other aspect in job-hunting is essence, which never really changes and deals with human activity. You may be overwhelmed about the fact that you are unemployed and cannot find a job, but you shouldn't worry so much you have some control over how your life goes whether it be 5% or 10%, you still have some control. The world is constantly changing and so is the job market. Job-hunting is not a science it is an art an...

Week 3 (MKTG 347) - How to Help You Solve Your Problems in the Job Hunting World

Image
Now a days in order to get a job you need more than just a Bachelors degree. If you have no work experience your degree isn't always enough to get you a job. Back in the day the unemployed took only about 5 weeks to find a job, well times have gotten harder, between 17% to 30% of the unemployed take over a year to find a new job. Since I have been working since my senior year of high school I have been able to get jobs a little more easily, especially since I worked in my High School as a bank teller. EarthMover Credit Union had its own branch within my school and they offered students a chance to work as bank tellers and I decided I would do it. To work as bank teller you had to have many skills, and the skills are used in many other work places which is why I seem to get jobs more easily. But for those of you who can't find a job so easily these are the things you need to be aware of when looking for employment. When looking at job boards it can be broken down into thes...
