Week 6 (MKTG 347) - Salary Negotiations
Salary is one of the main things you need to discuss before you accept a job offer. Always be sure to ask before you accept, because if you don't you may receive a really low pay and you probably don't even know it. Do not start negotiating your salary until the interview is over and they have expressed interest in having you at their business. About the time they offer you the job, then you should ask about the salary. Sometimes employers will ask you in the beginning of the interview process, try responding by saying that you will happily answer that, but first you would like to know more about what the job involves.
Now for the bidding of the amount of your salary. An employer may be willing to pay you $25 and hour, but want to try to get you for $16 an hour, you can basically ask for pay any where in between the range of $16 - $25. You can negotiate the highest pay, but the employer wants to save money so from there you can try to negotiate a salary that is not too low and not too high. Another tip when discussing salary, never be the first to mention it, let them start that discussion. Before you go to the interview do some research on how much this business usually pays their employees and how much they pay people that hold the job title you are interviewing for. This way you know how much to ask for when the employer asks about salary. Follow these guidelines and the salary negotiation process will go a lot smoother for you!
